Its name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source using six lengths of leather tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.

Meandering through the spectacular Caprivi Strip in northwest Namibia, the Kwando River rises from the central Angolan highlands forming the boundary between Namibia, Zambia and Angola. The area surrounding the Kwando River is known for its protected game reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Nambwa Tented Lodge is within the heart of the Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA) and part of the large Peace Park initiative. It is one of the only lodges uniquely situated inside the Bwabwata National Park.
